Archaeology Notes

NJ04NW 7 0070 4805.

A green mound, which existed outside the garden of Dunphail until the late 18th century, was said to be the grave of some 14th century Cummings who had been beheaded.

Intending to enlarge his garden Mr Dunbar the proprietor of the time, opened the mound, 'when five or six rudely constructed stone coffins were found, each containing a skeleton complete, with the exception of the skull'.

Trans Inverness Sci Soc Fld Club 1885; T D Lauder nd.

According to Mr J Cran, Head Gardener, Dunphail Estate, Edinkillie, Moarayshire, these burials were discovered close to a yew tree situated at NJ 0070 4805, 50.0m south of Dunphail Castle, at the north-west extremity of the plain in which the garden of Dunphail House lies. Nothing can be seen of either mound or coffins, but the remains of three sides of a drystone enclosure, 0.5m high, are visible around the drystone enclosure, 0.5m high, are visible around the tree, probably constructed to protect the site after the mound was opened.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS(NKB) 18 August 1965.
