Cruib Lodge is situated on a small bay on the N shore of Loch Tarbert, the loch that extends from the W coast of Jura almost dividing the island in two. This is a remote location, and the building has been sited to be accessible by boat while providing access to the high ground of Jura for the pursuit of deer. It has formerly served as deer larder, stable and bothy for the gamekeeper.
A building with an enclosure attached to its N side is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyll and Bute, sheet clxvii, 1901) and was evidently constructed between 1878, when the survey for the 1st edition was undertaken, and 1897, when the the 2nd edition was surveyed.
A roofed building annotated ‘Cruib Lodge’ is depicted on the current edition of the OS (GIS) Mastermap.
