Archaeology Notes

NT27SE 3954 2772 7234

Little now remains of the buildings shown on the OS 25-inch map on the N side of the Innocent Railway some 340m to the E of Wells o' Wearie (Edinburghshire 1896, sheet iii.12). What little survives belongs to the easternmost building, and comprises a stretch of external wall, within which a blocked fireplace and small window embrasure are visible. The area is now used as a turning point for vehicles.

Visited by RCAHMS (ARG), 15 December 1998.

NMRS, MS/726/96 (75, no. 85).

Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (15 February 2000)

A site visit was carried out to a section of the Holyrood Park boundary wall near to Wells o' Wearie (NT 277 723) in February 2000. Part of the wall had been dismantled where a large tree had damaged it. The affected area of the wall was photographed, the profile drawn, the line of the wall planned, and the area was located with reference to a nearby brick building.

Rig and furrow was noted in the area, but without excavation it could not be related to the wall.
