Archaeology Notes

NH96SE 5 c. 99 61.

A short distance NE of Wellhill on the summit of the easternmost of two ridges which turn southwards from a high (over 50ft) sandhill on the Culbin Sands, a fragment of a 'cinerary urn', several other sherds, a hammmer-stone, and quantities of grain were unearthed by the writer in 1910. A later visit in July unearthed another hammer-stone, 3 broken ones, a flint scraper, 2 small pieces of calcined bone, and futher fragments of the original urn, all within an area of some 20 square feet. There was also evidence of a hearth on the site, but no other evidence of human occupation was found.

In 1908 the writer unearthed sherds of a cylindrical vessel and 2 pieces of flint, in a midden of shells and faunal bones. The urn was 5 3/4 inches high x 5 1/4 inches in diameter. In close proximity he also found stray sherds and flints within middens.

J G Callander 1911.
