(HY 2306 0958) Tumulus (OE) (Chambered Mound)
OS 6" map, Orkney 2nd ed., (1903).
This mound, 95ft. in diameter, was partly excavated in 1900 and 1902, and found to contain two paved chambers probably with corbelled roofs, which were each joined by a short passage to a common, stone-walled, paved enclosure.
The two chambers were 9ft. by 9ft. 10ins. by 5ft. high, and 8ft. by 9ft. by about 4ft. high, and had recesses in the walls. One such may have been a well. Two superimposed floor levels were found in one of the chambers, and a claystone implement and pottery implements were also found. The structure was not a burial chamber and was probably domestic, confirmed by a mass of burnt stones now seen in the bank of the mound.
M M Charleson 1903; RCAHMS 1946.
The mound is about 29m. in diameter and 2.0m in height, and has been dug into on the E. side. No trace of chambers is to be seen, but in the centre there protrude three stones set on edge. This appears to be a small settlement (? Skara Brae or secondary broch type).
Resurveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (RD) 20 September 1964.
