Activities

Standing Building Recording (21 October 2014)

NJ 86495 02161 A programme of archaeological work is being undertaken prior to and during development of land at Oldfold Farm (latterly the Aberdeen Riding Centre) and land to the N. A standing building survey was undertaken on 21 October 2014 of Oldfold Farm in advance of its demolition.

Oldfold Farm was constructed in the mid-19th century as a courtyard steading with adjacent farmhouse, and first appears on the 1st Edition OS map of 1863. Only two long steadings survive to the SW and NE of the courtyard. The upper level hay lofts had been removed and many of the original windows were blocked. A modern stable block had been built between the steadings.

Archaeological Evaluation (13 March 2017 - 16 March 2017)

ANJ 86324 02190 An evaluation was undertaken, 13–16 March 2017, prior to the Phase 2 development works at Oldfold Farm. The work consisted of 3130 linear metres of trenching throughout the six paddocks that formed the development area (Fields A–F). An area of modern made ground in Field B indicated the former extent of the farm yard. Occasional post medieval

rubble drains were encountered across the area, varying in alignment and measuring up to 0.7m wide.
