Archaeology Notes

NH95NE 1 9900 5841.

A hoard of silver coins, to the value of $46 mainly 4d pieces of William the Lyon contemporary of Henry II of England, were found in the year 1780 in digging a foundation in order to enlarge the church of Dyke. One of the workmen, when removing the earth near the steps which led to the burial place of Brodie of Brodie found the coins and concealing them disposed of them to silversmiths. They had been minted at Edinburgh, Perth, Roxburgh, Stirling and Berwick. About a hundred of the coins were acquired by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
