Archaeology Notes

NH94NW 2 94 47.

Various dedications to 'Ichid' - possibly Eochaidh, Abbot of Lismore, who died in 635 - suggest that there may have been a Celtic establishment at Belivat.

'Belivat' is said to mean 'Ichid's Town'. 'Fichid's Fair' was held there until the mid-18th century. A stone at Wester Belivat used to be known as 'Ichid's Chair'. There is also 'Ichid's Well'.

G Bain 1893.

Belivat is for 'Buail-Fhiodhaid' which was believed by the old people of the district in 1906 to mean 'Fold of the Thicket'.

W J Watson 1926.

No further information 'Ichid's Chair' and 'Ichid's Well' are no longer known locally.
