Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The farmstead of Wester Achmore, which lies at the foot of the Hill of Achmore, comprises three roofed buildings, according to the 1975 Ordnance Survey 1:10000 map.

A century earlier, when the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of Banffshire (1872) was published, Wester Achmore comprised three roofed buildings. One of these was a U-shaped range, built around three sides of a courtyard. There were a roofless building and an enclosure. Nearby, a mill lead brought water to what appears to be a dam equipped with a sluice, showing that water-power was being used at Wester Achmore. Throughout the nineteenth century water was used to drive a range of farm machinery, such as threshing machines and mills for grinding corn.
