Activities

Field Visit (14 June 2021 - 18 June 2021)

NH 96000 29000 A programme of archaeological desk-based assessment (DBA) and walkover survey was undertaken, 14–18 June 2021, in order to inform woodland creation proposals for areas of Muckrach Estate, near Grantown-on-Spey. The DBA noted that this was an area of high archaeological activity, particularly in the form of post-medieval farming with several townships shown on historic maps. These included the following sites previously recorded on Canmore (Canmore ID: 116156, 15427, 15428,

15418, 15417, and 116201).

The walkover survey identified and recorded 175 features or small groups of features, most of which had already been noted in the DBA. These included the remains of six townships, two groups of isolated clearance cairns, a group of possible prehistoric cairns and at least 12 groups of grouse butts. Recommendations are made for avoiding these features during plantation, including exclusion from planting areas with a programme of marking out, and some additional recording to enable planting in some areas. The following new sites were recorded.

NH 9480 2699 Allt nan Coileach Dubha township. NH 9781 2849 Achahannal Burn township.
