Archaeology Notes

NT14SW 82 from c.1341 4466 to c.1383 4449.

Aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1996) has recorded a low, sinuous mound (traces of an old road) running across a slope 250m N of Castle Craig (NT14SW 66). The road connected Castle Craig to the route of the modern A72. It is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Peebles-shire 1859, sheet viii) as a roadway running N from the castle and reaching arable land at NT 1360 4439, where it continues N for some 210m before curving W towards Smithyhill farmsteading (NT 1343 4468). This route is followed by a modern field boundary on the current edition of the 1:10000 map (1992). The road appears to bifurcate at NT c.1358 4460 and a sinuous stretch runs to the E towards the castle lodge (NT 1391 4449). This branch of the road is not recorded on either the 1st edition or modern OS maps.
