Archaeology Notes

NJ61NE 102 6819 1814

This disused quarry is situated in an area of deciduous woodland on a steep, SW-facing slope 210m NE of Ramstone (NJ61NE 44). Kidney-shaped on plan, with an entrance on the SW, the pit measures at least 22m from E to W by 20m transversely and it has been dug into the slope on the NE to a depth of 4m. A second pit is situated 15m to the SW, and measures about 8m in diameter by up to 2.5m in depth where a vertical rock-face is exposed on the E. The entrance to this pit is on the W, and there are spoil tips to the N and E.

The quarry is first depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1901, sheet liii.SE).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 8 November 2000.
