HU43NW 35.01 40029 39363 Prince Olav's Slipway

This yard was established c.1919 to carry out repairs and service boat engine equipment. It consists of a workshop and haulage engine house, main slipway, paint store, pier, small 1940s slipway and workshops; machine, welder's and blacksmiths shops, storage and offices (for details see NMRS MS/744/210/32, sheets 2-6 of 6).

The W slipway (HU43NW 35.01; NMRS MS/744/210/32, sheet 1 of 6, item 6) was built in 1942 as part of the works involvement with the service and maintenance of boats used by Norway during World War 2. A second and larger main slipway was installed during the1970s to cater for the larger boats that required the work services.

The works is now part of a Lerwick based group, details of which can be found in the report in NMRS MS/744/210/30 (Malakoff and Moore Ltd, North Ness, Lerwick).

Visited by RCAHMS (GJD), October 1994.
