This boat building yard is situated in the Westshore Harbour, E of Prince Olav's Slipway (HU43NW 35.01). The yard was established in the late-mid 1940s by David Howarth and operated for about 10 years. The workshop was located on the ground floor of a large, late 19th century, 2-storey and attic building (NMRS MS/744/210/31, item 1 on sheet 1). Boats were constructed in an open yard in fromt of the main boat shed (NMRS MS/744/210/31, item 2 on sheet 1).
The slip for the yard has been built over by later redevelopments of the site, especially in the area in front of the boat shed. However, a small section was visible on the date of survey (NMRS MS/744/210/31, item 3 on sheet 1; NMRS photograph C62440/14/CN).
David Howarth was a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy during World War 2 and helped organise the 'Shetland Bus'.
