Archaeology Notes

NH85SE 4 c. 893 525.

A burying ground was visible near Rait Castle (NH85SE 10) in 1776. Some of the gravestone bore the figure of a bow and arrow, but the spot has been ploughed and the stones broken.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1978)

Rait Castle, Chapel and Burial-ground NH c. 893 525 NH85SE 4

No traces are visible of the burial-ground said to have existed in this area in 1776, but which was ploughed up before 1893. Simpson suggests that a detached oblong building to the SE of the hall-house (NH85SE 10) is the chapel, which was in existence by c. 1198-9 and still in use in 1343.

RCAHMS 1978, visited May 1978
