Note (10 October 2024)

The site of the demolished Leith station or South Leith station lies on the E side of Constitution Street where the former railway crossed the road. The railway station opened in 1832 by the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway as Leith Station but closed in 1846. The station was reopened on the 1st October 1859, with map evidence suggesting that a new station building was erected, which was later to become Nos 3 and 5 Constitution Street, as depicted on the OS Edinburgh Town Plan 1:1056 map (Edinburgh 1876, sheet 13). The station was re-enamed South Leith Station, although the OS 1876 map it is annotated Leith Station.

The station finally closed on the 1 July 1903.

The adjoining sidings were used as a coal depot and continued in use until the 1960's when a scarp merchant took the yard over as annotated on the OS 1:1250 map (1970). A goods shed is only depicted on the 1876 map in southern part of the coal depot but was not shown on later editions of OS maps. What may be the former office became No.1 Constitution Street
