Archaeology Notes

NO79SW 64 centred 7146 9254

(Location cited as NO 7146 9254). Eslie. Several clearance cairns have been noted on a gentle SW-facing slope in an area of bracken and rough grazing at an altitude of about 180m OD. One of the cairns has two or three larger stones protruding from the interior and may be a ring-cairn. There are two smaller mounds on the periphery of the group, while a bank about 1.5m broad and 0.4m high runs close by to the N and parallel to an existing field boundary.

Field Visit (28 April 1999)

NO79SW 64 centred 7146 9254

A possible ring-cairn, situated in rough stony ground between fields to the E of Eslie farm, was recorded during a pre-afforestation survey. The site is distinguished from the clearance cairns in the area (some noted under the field-system described under NO76SW 66) by the generally smaller stone content and the presence of two or three larger stones protruding from the interior. It measures c.10m in diameter and stands to about 0.4m in height and has two smaller mounds on its periphery. Given the proximity to the improved fields, it would seem that most of the cairn material derives from recent field clearance. However, the small number of larger stones within the inner part of the mound, suggests that it is a ring-cairn or other prehistoric feature augmented by clearance.
