Archaeology Notes

NH82NW 2 8042 2808.

A stone bearing an incised cross was found lying loose among the shingle at the foot of the old Gallowhill, Tomatin. The cross is distinct though rudely chiselled, and has an appearance of freshness which raises a certain degree of doubt in connection with it. It does, however, resemble cross-bearing slabs found in other quarters.

Trans Inverness Sci Soc Fld Club 1898.

The cross-inscribed stone lies at NH 8042 2808 at the bottom of an old quarry on the S. side of Gallowhill. It is triangular, measuring 1.9m by 1.6m and 0.4m high, and bearing a crude St. Andrew's Cross. Probably not an early cross.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (N K B) 1 November 1966.
