Archaeology Notes

NN74NE 107 787 485.

Aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1995) has revealed a series of cropmarks, including those of an enclosure, immediately to the E of Comrie Castle (NN74NE 29). The circular enclosure, measuring approximately 37m in diameter, is centred on NN c.7875 4856, and has a possible entrance on the N side. A linear cropmark runs from the river bank 50m to the E, to a pond in the SE corner of the field. This is depicted as a defaced parish boundary on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet xlviii), and so may have been a ditch, or hedge line. A number of other linear features, two of which intersect the W and N sides of the enclosure, are also visible, and may be geological features. A further series of cropmarks have been recorded in the S half of the field (NN74SE 108).
