Archaeology Notes

NT55SW 51 5213 5377

The cropmarks of two pit-alignments has been revealed by oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1995) 600m N of Addinston Lodge. The longer of these is aligned NW-SE and is slightly curved. It is visible for at least 450m and extends over two fields (NT c.5220 5371 to NT c.5188 5401). A section of the pit-alignment about 100m in length is indistinct. A second pit-alignment is visible 30m to the S, aligned NW-SE, and visible for about 90m (NT c.5225 5363 to NT c.5219 5369). It terminates immediately at the W side of a fort and settlement (NT55SW 5). Both alignments consist of narrow, rectangular pits. The cropmarks of two other pit-alignments have been recorded about 300m to the NW and 800m to the SW respectively (NT55SW 52 and NT55SW 25 ).
