Archaeology Notes

NJ52NW 95 5421 2586

The market stance shown on the E side of Clatt village (NJ52NW 33) on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet xliii) had been given over to a gravel pit by the end of the 19th century (OS 6-inch map, (Aberdeenshire, 2nd edition, 1902, sheet xliii.SW). The gravel pit is now disused and can be seen immediately S of the minor road that leads to Tofthills farmsteading (NJ52NE 89). The S side is clearly defined by overgrown scarps which rise to a height of at least 2m, but most of the workings are now occupied by the garden of the house that stands on the NE edge of the pit. The pit is first depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map when a second, smaller, excavation is shown immediately to the E.
