Built in 1897 to the design of A H L Mackinnon, this fire station comprises a three-storeyed main block (ashlar granite) of five bays, each with rusticated arches for vehicle access at ground level, pedimented first-floor windows, and a top balustrade with a coat of arms at its centre. To the N side is an additional three-storeyed three-bay office building, also facing onto King Street. To the rear of the main block there is a tall hose-drying tower of similar granite construction.

Also to the rear is a yard, enclosed by ranges of buildings at the N (built into the slope adjacent to a railway), E and S sides, most of which were to be demolished in 2001 during the conversion of the site to student accommodation.

During August 2000, RCAHMS conducted a photographic survey of the fire station. The purpose of this survey was to enhance and augment RCAHMS' existing holdings.

Visited by RCAHMS (MKO), August 2000.
