Garrel Mill-house.

Garrel Mill and its mill-house stand on opposite sides of the Kilsyth-Stirling road 200 yds. N. of its junction, in Kilsyth, with the Falkirk highway. The mill-house, which is on the NW. side of the road, has been renovated, harled in cement and re-roofed, but its walling and internal arrangements are substantially original and the structure probably dates from the end of the 17th century. The house is oblong on plan, 37 ft. 3 in. long by 19 ft. 9. in. wide, with a semicircular projection housing a geometrical stair in the centre of the back wall, and is two storeys high. The SE. facade, which is unaltered, has an entrance in the centre with two windows on either side of it and five others on the floor above, symmetrically spaced. The entrance has a lugged and bowtell-moulded architrave, and above it a moulded corbel carries a plain shield. Another corbel on the S. corner carries a cubical sundial. The arrises of the windows are chamfered, and the wallhead finishes in a plain eaves-band. The entrance opens into a lobby, with a room on either side of it; on the first floor there is similarly a room on either side of a landing and modern bathroom. The stair and the baluster rai are of wood, and the balusters of iron. To the original house there have been added a one-storeyed outshot on the S., used as a bedroom, and a two-storeyed extension abutting the NE. gable; doors to these have been broken out, as well as a back entrance from the stair.

RCAHMS 1963, visited 2 October 1953.
