Osborne (2006) records the use of the Abbey Mill as a drill hall, which in 1914 was drill station for "C" Squadron, Lothian & Borders Horse, and "H" Company, 4th battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. The building continued in use as a Territorial Army Centre, and is now a shop.

Publication Account (1998)
To the north ran the Mill Lade, or Abbey Lade, figure 20.F that fed at least one of the abbey's mills; and was partially diverted also to function as a main drain to serve the latrines of the east range and, probably, also those of the lay brothers. Both of these are clearly visible, as are the tanning pits in the lay brothers' range, all a reminder that monastic life was not simply one of prayer.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)
