Architectural Details, etc., The Tower, Portobello.
The tower, which stands at the shore end of Ramsay Lane, is a late building of brick and rubble. In the external masonry are incorporated sundry details of moulded work removed from houses in Edinburgh. There are moulded jambs from eight 16th-century fireplaces; the head of a Gothic aumbry of the early 16th century; a door lintel, dated 1674, and inscribed PAX INTRANTIBVS SALVS EXEVNTIBVS (‘Peace to those, who enter, health to those who leave’); a 16th-century skew-put, surmounted by a headless figure and bearing a shield with a merchant’s mark; a panel containing a shield charged with a tree eradicated between two nude figures; a 17th-century pediment; a stone bearing a merchant's mark; moulded and carved lintels, jambs and architraves.
In the tower the chamber on the third floor has a stone fireplace of 16th-17th century workmanship, and in the ceiling are inset four picture panels, painted in oil on pine boards; two panels represent architectural and garden subjects, another shows Christ washing the feet of the disciples, while the fourth depicts Pilate washing his hands. One panel is dated 1625.The paintings suggest Italian workmanship.
