A hospital dedicated to St Thomas 'for the reception of poor people' is described as being at 'the bridge of Portmoak' in 1184. Old Gullet Bridge is a small stone-built bridge crossing the original course of the River Leven on the modern B920, the causeway to Scotlandwell.
