Archaeology Notes

NH77NE 4 7940 7976 and 7920 7988

At NH 7940 7976 (A) (Information from OS reviser [ORD]) and NH 7920 7988 (B) are two circular huts, with no trace of contemporary cultivation.

Hut "A" measures 11.0m in diameter between the centres of a wall spread to 3.0m. The entrance is in the E.

Hut "B" is visible as an ill-defined platform, 14.0m in diameter. The E side has been truncated by a ditch, and no entrance is evident.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (I M T), 20 July 1973.

Hilton of Calrossie 1 NH 792 798 NH77NE 4(B)

The wasted remains of this hut-circle are visible on top of a hillock 180m WSW of Hilton of Calrossie. It measures 14m in external diameter with the wall spread to a thickness of 2.5m. What may be small cairns are visible to the N and NE.

Hilton of Calrossie 2 NH 794 797 NH77NE 4(A)

This hut-circle, which stands 200m SSE of Hilton of Calrossie, measures about 12m in internal diameter within a wall at least 0.9m in thickness. An entrance 1 m wide is visible on the E.
