Field Visit (May 1976)

NR36SW 14.05 32183 62791

The shell of this two-storeyed Gothic folly (NR321 627) occupies the summit of a headland overlooking Traigh Cill an Rubha about 1.2km W of Islay House. It dates probably from the late 18th or early 19th century and appears prominently on a number of the Heath watercolours of about 1830. It stands to a height of 5.2m and measures 4.2m from N to S by 3.4m transversely over rubble-built walls 0.7m in thickness. The walls have blind arch-pointed openings with oculi above and a blind cross-slit in the S wall, and rise to a crenellated parapet. The doorway is in the N wall.
