Archaeology Notes

NG77SE 37 7923 7348

Eight lazy beds, a small structure, possibly a pen, two enclosures and a dyke were recorded during a pre-afforestation survey of An Torr, Badachro. They are situated on a predominantly E-facing slope above Camasnaharry and are probably associated with that township as there is no indication of habitation, even seasonal, nearby.

The lazy beds (NMRS MS 1008/1, no.6) are situated on a gentle, NW-facing slope the E edge of an area of old peat cuttings. They measure 20m from NW to SE.

The pen (NMRS MS 1008/1, no.8) measures 2m by 2.6m within rubble footings. It is connected to an intermittent wall forming an enclosure forming a field roughly 20m square, within which there are occasional clearance cairns. Traces of a second enclosure (NMRS MS 1008/1, no.9), or field are situated to the S at NG 7929 7337. Defined by an area of bracken on a fairly steep, E-facing slope, the enclosure is defined by a NW to SE running dyke which may be followed for about 30m. At the base of the slope there is a 150m long stretch of dyke (NMRS MS 1008/1, no.10) running N to the shore and then SE across a rocky point.

C Dagg, 12 November 1998; NMRS MS 1008/1 nos.6, 8 9, and 10
