Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Clach Bhan is an area of natural outcrop lying at around 518m above sea level. The place name is derived from the gaelic for 'stone' and 'woman'.

An eighteenth-century account tells how this site once used to be a focus for pregnant women, who travelled from miles to visit the site in the hope that they would be granted a painless labour and quick delivery. Two armchair-like seats are said to have been excavated into the outcrop.
