A barrage balloon mooring site is situated immediately N of the public road 200m E of its lowest point where it crosses the Pegal Burn. The site is visible on vertical air photographs (RAF LEU/UK 4, pt.1, 7031-7032, flown 1948).
Visited by RCAHMS (DE), May 1996
The barrage balloon mooring site survives in rough grass on the N side of the B9047 road about 200m ESE of a sharp bend and small stone bridge over the Pegal Burn. The site consists of three rings of mooring blocks with steel rings in them surrounding a central large block with a single ring. The innermost ring of blocks has double rings, with a secondary ring immediately outside this with single loops and a further 3.20m outside of this is the third ring. The total diameter is about 26m and it was noted that some of the mooring blocks in the outer ring are slightly out of alignment.
The mooring site is one of a large group of fixed barrage balloon sites located on the W siode of Scapa Flow as opposed to those on the E side which were mainly flown from trawlers.
