Archaeology Notes

ND39SW 64 centred 3417 9102

All that remains of this barrage balloon site is the concrete winch-lorry stop blocks situated some 50m W of the accommodation huts of the coast battery (ND39SW 46). One of the stop blocks has a pecked inscription ' Spr Warren SG; Spr Wilkinson S; 684 AW Coy; Royal Engineers; 14th July 1943'. The balloon site is visible on vertical air photographs (LEU/UK 4 pt1 17, 7039-7040, flown 1948).

Visited by RCAHMS (GS), 30 May 1997

On the date of the measured survey several of the concrete blocks were visible including the central holding block with metal ring. Ground inspection located almost 95% of the three rings of blocks from which a ground plan was created.

Visited by RCAHMS (JB, AL), 6 June 1997
