Archaeology Notes

NH72NE 17 7999 2944 to 7974 2999 MR 2 (Formerly Lin 501 [part of]).

Having followed the former A9, now an unclassified road, as far as the drive to Tomatin House at NH 798 296, a short stretch is visible beside a field wall. This well-defined section follows a straight course E, heading for the A9, and then disappears near the Allt-na-Frithe.

W Taylor 1976; J and A Baker 1982.

From the Porters Lodge at the entrance to the grounds of Tomatin House, Wade's road heads N through a field under pasture and then disappears in the vicinity of the A9. The route appears to run along the top of a stone dyke as a grass-covered track, both track and stonework being severely eroded and falling into disrepair.

Activities

Strip And Record (11 April 2022 - 5 May 2022)

AOC CFA JV undertook a programme of archaeological mitigation on behalf of Transport Scotland for the Tomatin to Moy section of the A9 Dualling Programme (AMJV 2016).

Three areas were proposed for strip, map and archaeological excavation (A9Dualling/T-M/LP01-A; A9Dualling/T-M/LP01-B; and A9Dualling/T-M/LP10 at NH 79779 29842; NH 79756 29766; NH 78479 32558) to investigate a 20m buffer around features identified in trial trenching.

The main objective of the strip and map phase was to enable a comprehensive investigation of any sites discovered by the archaeological trial trenching and allow for the preservation by record of any archaeological features encountered through subsequent archaeological excavation to enable analysis, interpretation and dissemination of the results.

Ground Survey (23 February 2022 - 4 March 2022)

AOC Archaeology Ltd undertook a programme of archaeological mitigation on behalf of Transport Scotland ahead of the Tomatin to Moy section of the A9 Dualling Programme.

An earthwork survey was undertaken on a stretch of Wade's 18th century Military Road (NH72NE NH 7975 2978) to the north of Tomatin. The surviving remains of the military road comprised a revetment wall running for 115m northwest to southeast between the Porters Lodge and the Allt na Frithe.

Trial Trench (21 February 2022 - 10 April 2022)

NH 72206 36110 to NH 80988 27955: AOC CFA JV undertook a programme of archaeological trial trenching on behalf of Transport Scotland for the Tomatin to Moy section of the A9 Dualling Programme (AMJV 2016), comprising a seven week fieldwork programme from 21st February to 10th April.

The trial trenching was required over twelve Land Parcels and consisted of 269 trenches and trial pits. Archaeological features were identified within two Land Parcels and comprised two pits and four linear features in Land Parcel 1 and two small sub-circular pits filled with fire waste in Land Parcel 10. The trenches in the remaining Land Parcels did not contain any archaeological features.

Project (21 February 2022 - 5 May 2022)

NH 72206 36110 to NH 80988 27955 AOC Archaeology undertook a programme of works including Trial Trenching; Strip and Record; Metal-detecting survey; Standing Building Recording; and a Landscape Survey as part of the A9 Dualling Tomatin to Moy.

The Proposed Scheme measures approximately 9.6km, beginning just south of Tomatin (NGR 281142, 827460) and passing the settlement of Moy, before ending at Creagan Bad Each (NGR 272298, 835880), a few kilometres to the north of Moy.
