(HU 5838 9383) Chapel & Burial Ground (LB) (Site of)

O.S.6"map, Shetland, 2nd ed.,(1900).

The site of an ancient Romish chapel situated on the summit of a small rocky hillock .... called Kirk Knowe.

Within the last 50 years the foundation stones of the chapel could be seen, but those that have not been removed are now overgrown.

Within the same period the track of a dyke (which, however, is now obliterated) could also be seen enclosing a small rectangular space contiguous to the site of the chapel, on the north side, and which is said to have been a burial ground.

Both are considered to be coeval and to belong to a very remote period, but no particular date is assigned.

Name Book 1878.

No trace and no further information regarding either chapel or burial ground.

Visited by OS(NKB) 15th may 1969.
