This intermediate station on the Glasgow-Kilmarnock-Gretna ('Nith valley') main line of the former Glasgow and South-Western Rly was opened on 28 October 1850 by the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle. The station closed to regular passenger traffic on 6 December 1965, but the line remains in regular passenger use.
