Activities

Field Visit (26 July 2021)

The two features shown on the current edition of the OS map are shieling huts and both are depicted as roofed buildings on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1854, sheet 18). The western is defined by little more than a low spread stony bank (NB 21584 40581), however, the eastern is the better preserved and, though the position of the entrance is uncertain, its N end still stands 0.8m in height over four courses (NB 21643 40621). About 80m to the SSE, a third feature is depicted as an unroofed building on the 1st edition map; this too may be a shieling hut but it was not located on the date of visit.

Note

What may be one roofed shieling-hut and two unroofed shieling-huts are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1854, sheet 18). This site lies within a system of head-dykes (NB24SW 60) centred on NB 218 412.

One unroofed building which may be a shieling-hut and one enclosure are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975).
