Activities

Field Visit (6 June 1996)

NG72NE 77 7643 2748

NG 780 300 (centre) In the springs of 1995 and 1996 a field survey was carried out on the NTS Balmacara Estate. The estate covers approximately 22.5 sqkm of the Lochalsh peninsula. It lies largely within the points of a triangle formed by Kyle in the SW, Plockton in the N and Balmacara in the SE. The range of topographic variation found within the estate largely reflects that found on the W coast of Scotland generally. The range of sites found during the survey reflects this topographic variation.

During two seasons of survey 109 new sites were recorded. A full report is lodged with the NMRS.

Field Visit (May 1996 - June 1996)

Just beyond a modem boundary fence, which lies between modem houses and the foot of a steep west facing slope, are the very degraded ruins of a stone built house and byre.

The remains which are in a disturbed and overgrown condition consist of:-

a) A house which measures 8.0m north to south by 4.5m east to west over tumbled walls 1.1m thick. It is impossible to tell if the walls are square or round cornered. There is no obvious door opening.

Immediately to the south :-

b) A very degraded structure measuring approximately 5.0m by 4.5m over walls of unknown width.

A very badly degraded site that is being used as a refuse dump and play area for local children.
