Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Mellendean Steading lies about 1km east of Kelso and is situated above a steep slope overlooking the River Tweed. The steading was probably built some time in the early nineteenth century and is named on Tenant's Map of the County of Roxburgh, published in 1840. Like many steadings in the area around Kelso, it was owned by the Duke of Roxburghe, and records show that by 1877 #500, a considerable sum of money at the time, had been spent on improvements to the buildings.

Plans of Mellendean farmhouse, dating from the 1830s, show a rectangular two-storey main block with a garret or attic. Adjoining the main farmhouse is a kitchen with a storeroom above, forming a two-storey annexe. The building is fairly plain, with ashlar surrounds for the windows and doors and a slated roof.
