Watching Brief (16 April 2014)
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Kingsford Developments to undertaken historic building recording survey of the former Broughton Higher Grade School (and later City of Edinburgh Council offices) prior to renovation. The works were required as part of a planning condition on the development. The building was constructed in 1903 on the site of Blanfield House - which was demolished in the 1890s - as a Higher Grade school together with another school building (presently the Broughton Primary School) to the south. It was most recently used as offices for the City of Edinburgh Council. Despite its constant use as a school and offices throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, the building retains many of the original characteristics of an Edwardian building, including the white tiled walls, tall windows and doorways. The layout, also, has not been altered too much, as the larger classrooms were kept largely open-plan when converted to offices. The historic building recording survey has successfully recorded the building as a 'preservation by record' of the structure prior to renovation and no further historic building recording is recommended. However, an archaeological watching brief is still required on all ground-breaking works associated with the development to fully satisfy the planning condition.
