NG 780 300 (centre) In the springs of 1995 and 1996 a field survey was carried out on the NTS Balmacara Estate. The estate covers approximately 22.5km2 of the Lochalsh peninsula. It lies largely within the points of a triangle formed by Kyle in the SW, Plockton in the N and Balmacara in the SE. The range of topographic variation found within the estate largely reflects that found on the W coast of Scotland generally. The range of sites found during the survey reflects this topographic variation.
During two seasons of survey 109 new sites were recorded. A full report is lodged with the NMRS.

Field Visit (May 1996 - June 1996)
On a grassy south-west facing hillside overlooking the northern end of Duirinish are the degraded remains of a bow fronted stone structure. The remains sit on a terrace dug into the hill slope and measure 9.5m north to south by 3.5m at the ends and 4.5m in the centre, over walls with rounded corners 1.1m thick. An entrance 1.0m wide faces west and lies in the centre of the bowed west wall. The interior of the structure has been used as a rubbish tip. Partially overlying the northern end of the structure is a later rubble built bothy/pen measuring 3.0m by 2.5m over walls 0..7m thick. The entrance into this structure lies in the east end and is 1.0m wide. Dense bracken covers the site.
The only bow fronted house found during the survey. It's position on a hillside overlooking level cultivated land and the sea beyond is reminiscent of many 'Viking' period farms in Orkney.
