NG 780 300 (centre) In the springs of 1995 and 1996 a field survey was carried out on the NTS Balmacara Estate. The estate covers approximately 22.5km2 of the Lochalsh peninsula. It lies largely within the points of a triangle formed by Kyle in the SW, Plockton in the N and Balmacara in the SE. The range of topographic variation found within the estate largely reflects that found on the W coast of Scotland generally. The range of sites found during the survey reflects this topographic variation.
During two seasons of survey 109 new sites were recorded. A full report is lodged with the NMRS.

Field Visit (May 1995 - June 1995)
In a bowl-like depression between several large rocky outcrops and about 300m southwest of Duirinish is a cast concrete shooting butt. The north facing side of the butt is packed with numerous bullet holes, many with the brass bullet still embedded. The shooting stance must therefore lie off to the north. This could not be located. This butt measures 3.60m east-west by 2.20m high. A 1.0m right angle turn at each end acts as a buttress. A large piece of the west buttress has dropped out and lies on the ground at the foot of the wall. There is a large fallen concrete slab lying at an angle
2m south of the butt. Immediately to the north side of the butt is an earth bank 4.0m long by 1.5m wide at the base and lm high, this must have acted as an impact absorbing back to the targets. About 15m to the south-west and lying across a small bum there is a concrete post like object which has an expanded terminal at one end. Two bolts protrude from the terminal. This object, perhaps some sort of signalling device is just over 2.0m long.
