NG 780 300 (centre) In the springs of 1995 and 1996 a field survey was carried out on the NTS Balmacara Estate. The estate covers approximately 22.5km2 of the Lochalsh peninsula. It lies largely within the points of a triangle formed by Kyle in the SW, Plockton in the N and Balmacara in the SE. The range of topographic variation found within the estate largely reflects that found on the W coast of Scotland generally. The range of sites found during the survey reflects this topographic variation.
During two seasons of survey 109 new sites were recorded. A full report is lodged with the NMRS.

Field Visit (May 1996 - June 1996)
Lying in an amphitheatre-like bowl in the hillside, with it's open end facing south-west and giving good views of the Skye Bridge, is a small bothy and an area of overgrown cultivation. The bothy is triangular in plan and measures some 4.0m on each side. A smaller, half circular pen is attached to it's west side. A large birch tree grows out of the centre of the bothy. The cultivation, in this case 2.0m wide lazy beds, covers the entire
area of the bowl, running from all sides down to a small bum which runs through the centre of the cultivated area and out of the entrance to the site in a south-westerly direction.

Condition Survey (1998 - 1998)
The numerous small structures and bothy/pen surrounded by lazy bed cultivation (NTS Ref: BAL 084.12-14) are as described by Dualchas .
The pen was not found during a search of the area although the pathway and turf dyke were clear (NTS Ref: BAL 085)
