The Easter Road volunteer artillery barracks appears on the Edinburgh town plan of 1876, and is still visible on the OS map surveyed in 1931. In 1914 it was the HQ of Forth Royal Garrison Artillery - defended Ports, and base for Nos. 1 to 4 Companies. It was also the HQ and base of "A" to "C" Sections, 3rd Lowland Division Field Ambulances, RAMC.
The original barracks buildings was joined on its W side by a large building labelled 'drill hall' between 1905 and 1912 (the dates of survey of two OS maps of the area).
The complex has been demolished for housing.
