Activities

Field Visit (6 June 1996)

NG72NE 64 centred 7720 2737

NG 780 300 (centre) In the springs of 1995 and 1996 a field survey was carried out on the NTS Balmacara Estate. The estate covers approximately 22.5 sqkm of the Lochalsh peninsula. It lies largely within the points of a triangle formed by Kyle in the SW, Plockton in the N and Balmacara in the SE. The range of topographic variation found within the estate largely reflects that found on the W coast of Scotland generally. The range of sites found during the survey reflects this topographic variation.

During two seasons of survey 109 new sites were recorded. A full report is lodged with the NMRS.

Field Visit (May 1996 - June 1996)

Built on an east facing hill slope and almost totally obscured by deep heather is a beautifully preserved single cell structure. This cell is built in the shape of a triangle with it's point facing away from the hill slope, each side measures 1.0m long. Two door openings face along the hill slope in opposite directions. The northern opening is 0.3m wide, the southern 0.6m wide. The walls which are 0.3m thick still stand to what is probably their full height of 0.9m.

Condition Survey (1998 - 1998)

The old roadway and small triangular shaped structure are as described by Dualchas

The sub-circular enclosure with a more recent structure inside is situated immediately to the south of the pipeline, although the knoll is not evident

The round house at NG77032740 is sited above the footpath to Scalpaidh, on a natural shelf half-way up th hillside and immediately west of a slight defile. It is buried in heather.

The small structure 3.2m in diameter was not found.

The round house at NG76942730 proved extremely difficult to locate in the long heather. It is situated just above the south-west part of a boggy area characterised by Dualchas as a grass-filled wet depression.
