Archaeology Notes

NH66NE 37 66 66

Not to be confused with pier at Alness, Belle Port (NH 67322 68892), for which see NH66NE 30.

(Location cited as NH 664 663). Alness Ferry: a roadway between steep banks curves down to the shore. At high tide no structural remains of the terminal are visible. The very exposed site lies directly S of and at the shortest crossing from the mouth of the Alness river [NH c. 65 67]. It may have originated as a fair weather terminal from some point on the Alness delta, perhaps the area of the present Dalmore Distillery pier (Dalmore Pier: NH66NE 36), long before the building Alness Belle Port (NH66NE 30), where there is a large ruined building and a similar road to the shore, more easily than Alness Ferry, or could have used Balblair [Balblair Pier: NH76NW 18, at NH 7024 6715] as an alternative refuge.

A Graham and J Gordon 1988.
