Standing Building Recording (28 October 2022)

NT 26255 74536 A Level 2 historic building survey and structural watching brief were carried out within a development plot at 4 Windsor Street, Edinburgh on 28 October 2022.

The origin of the building can be clearly dated to the early 1820s as a part of the expansion of Edinburgh New Town with the entire street being designed by William Playfair. It is a fine example of an early 19th-century Edinburgh townhouse. Externally the exterior of the property has undergone minimal changes such as the insertion of vents into some of the lower windows. Internally the building has been stripped of much of its original features during its time as a hotel from 1997 until recently, with the scars for the 1990s partitions still clearly visible. However, the building does retain some fine examples of plaster decoration including ceiling roses and cornices together with stone stairs with cast-iron balusters leading to the lower ground floor and basement. In two locations there is evidence of early wallpaper surviving; however, this is difficult to date but may be from the 19th century.
