Field Visit (8 June 1998)
NO77SE 48 centred 7899 7421
A substantial number of clearance cairns, lying within Birniehill Wood, were noted during a pre-afforestation survey by Headland Archaeology (NMRS MS 899/90, no.9). Constructed of rounded field stones, the cairns are typically between 2m and 3m in diameter and stand up to 0.4m in height although many could be described a s spreads or dumps. Few of the mounds are grass-covered. It is thought that these probably lie at the edge of a pre OS 1st edition boundary and relate to the improved agricultural landscape.
