Standing Building Recording (22 August 2022 - 13 October 2022)
NT 25979 74478 A historic building survey to an enhanced level, and an architectural watching brief was undertaken at Forth House (13-17 Forth Street), and an historic building survey to a basic level was undertaken at Playfair House (6 Broughton Street Lane). Both buildings were connected by a modern linking structure that joined their rear elevations.
Forth House was revealed to be an early 19th century, palace fronted tenement that was originally constructed as three separated dwellings with a shared grand-façade and rectangular gardens to their rear. Sometime in the later 19th, or early 20th century, the buildings were repurposed as the Forth Stationary works.
The building remained as a works until the 80s, when it was repurposed as offices and recording studios for Radio Forth. This sequence resulted with wholesale change to the internal divisions of Forth House, though sections of Georgian cornicing remained in places. Playfair House was a modern office building constructed in the late 20th century.
