Activities

Note

Shader comprises a pre-improvement township, a later crofting township both of which are unoccupied by the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Isle of Lewis Ross-shire 1853, sheet 5) and some lengths of head-dyke. To the SE is an extensive system of head-dykes (NB45SW 31) which may be partly associated with these townships.

The township was centred around the church (NB35SW 10) by the shore with a number of buildings, structures and enclosures spread across the present crofting field-system. It comprised thirty-nine unroofed buildings and seven enclosures.

A crofting township was established along the N side of a road. It comprised seventeen buildings and four enclosures. This crofting township probably replaced the pre-improvement township. By the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974) an extensive crofting field-system overlying the pre-improvement township is shown.

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 10 January 1997.
