Archaeology Notes

ND35SE 174 centred 3775 5098

A coast battery has been identified from oblique aerial photography (visible on RAF oblique photographs CPE/Scot/UK 293, [FFO], flown 1947, 69-70). Visible on the photographs are two gun emplacements with the battery observation post, and at least one roofless Nissen hut immediately to the N of the western emplacement. The Nissen hut to the N of the eastern emplacement appears intact. Three other buildings, possibly magazines or engine houses are visible on the photographs. No searchlight platforms are visible.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) October 1998

This coast battery was situated on the N shore of Wick Bay, to the E of the harbour and S of Broadhaven. An area of cleared ground marks the location of the battery. Only one searchlight emplacement could be found on the date of visit.

The battery was armed with 2 x 6-inch Mk XI guns, which were installed in 1940. The battery was placed on a care and maintainance basis in 1944.
